As a capstone course, the assessments emphasize project-based learning, problem-solving, and the integration of complex systems, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of Physical AI. Success in this course hinges on demonstrating not only individual technical proficiency but also the capacity to build functional, intelligent robotic behaviors.

Overview of Assessment Components

The course features a series of distinct, yet interconnected, project-based assessments. Each assessment is designed to test specific modules and learning outcomes, culminating in a comprehensive final capstone project. This progressive assessment structure allows students to build foundational skills before tackling more complex integrations. All assessments require practical implementation and demonstration, often within simulated environments, fostering a deep understanding of the challenges and solutions in embodied AI.

Detailed Assessment Components

1. ROS 2 Package Development Project

  • Objective: To demonstrate mastery of ROS 2 fundamentals, including node creation, inter-node communication (topics, services, actions), and package structure. This project assesses the student's ability to develop modular, scalable, and maintainable robot control software using Python.
  • Description: Students will be tasked with developing a ROS 2 package for a specific robotic sub-system. This could involve creating nodes for sensor data processing (e.g., publishing filtered IMU data), implementing a service for a discrete task (e.g., a "go-to-position" service), or designing an action server for a complex, goal-oriented behavior (e.g., a "pick-and-place" action). The project will require proper package manifest configuration, clear documentation of node functionalities, and adherence to ROS 2 best practices.
  • Deliverables: A functional ROS 2 package, Python source code, launch files, unit tests for key functionalities, and a detailed report explaining the design choices, implementation details, and demonstration of the package's capabilities within a simulated environment (e.g., using rviz or a simple Gazebo setup).
  • Learning Outcomes Assessed: Master ROS 2 for robotic control; Understand Physical AI principles (through basic sensor integration).

2. Gazebo Simulation Implementation

  • Objective: To assess students' ability to create, configure, and interact with realistic robot simulations using Gazebo, including accurate physics modeling and sensor emulation. This project focuses on building a robust digital twin for testing and development.
  • Description: Students will extend an existing robot model (e.g., a simplified humanoid or a mobile manipulator) or create a new one using URDF/SDF. They will then set up a Gazebo world, configure realistic physics properties (e.g., friction coefficients, mass distribution), and integrate various sensor plugins (e.g., LiDAR, depth camera, IMU). The task will involve programming the robot to perform a basic navigation or manipulation task within this simulated environment, utilizing the simulated sensor data.
  • Deliverables: URDF/SDF files for the robot and world, Gazebo launch files, ROS 2 nodes for interfacing with simulated sensors and actuators, Python code for the robot's task execution, and a report detailing the simulation setup, sensor configurations, and demonstration of the robot's behavior.

3. Isaac-Based Perception Pipeline

  • Objective: To develop and implement an AI-powered perception pipeline using NVIDIA Isaac Sim and potentially Isaac ROS, focusing on tasks critical for intelligent robot interaction such as object detection, pose estimation, or semantic segmentation. This assessment emphasizes synthetic data generation and accelerated AI inference.
  • Description: Students will utilize NVIDIA Isaac Sim to create a synthetic dataset for a specific perception task (e.g., identifying and localizing household objects, segmenting target regions for manipulation). They will then train a deep learning model using this synthetic data. The trained model will be integrated into a ROS 2 perception pipeline, potentially leveraging Isaac ROS for hardware acceleration, to perform real-time inference on either simulated camera feeds (from Isaac Sim) or a provided dataset of real-world images. The pipeline should output processed perception data (e.g., bounding boxes, object poses) that could inform a robot's actions.
  • Deliverables: Isaac Sim scene files and Python scripts for data generation, trained AI model, ROS 2 package containing the perception pipeline (with inference code), performance metrics (e.g., accuracy, inference speed), and a detailed technical report discussing the dataset generation, model architecture, training methodology, and evaluation.
  • Learning Outcomes Assessed: Develop with the NVIDIA Isaac AI robot platform; Design humanoid robots for natural interactions (through improved perception).

4. Final Capstone Project: Autonomous Humanoid with Conversational AI

  • Objective: This is the culminating project, requiring students to integrate all learned modules to create a simulated humanoid robot capable of receiving natural language commands, planning, navigating, perceiving objects, and manipulating them autonomously. It assesses the comprehensive understanding and application of Physical AI principles and embodied intelligence.
  • Description: Students will develop a complete system for a simulated humanoid robot within Isaac Sim or Gazebo. The robot will need to respond to a voice command (e.g., "Go to the kitchen, find the red apple, and place it on the table"). This involves:
    • Speech Recognition: Using a speech-to-text service to convert voice commands to text.
    • Cognitive Planning: Employing an integrated LLM (or a simplified rule-based system mimicking LLM logic) to translate the natural language command into a sequence of executable ROS 2 actions and sub-goals (e.g., navigate to room, search for object, pick up object, navigate to destination, place object).
    • Navigation: Using Nav2 (adapted for bipedal motion) to plan and execute paths while avoiding dynamic obstacles.
    • Perception: Utilizing computer vision techniques (potentially from the Isaac-based perception pipeline project) to identify and localize the target object.
    • Manipulation: Executing robust grasping and placement actions to interact with the object.
  • Deliverables: A fully integrated ROS 2 workspace for the humanoid robot, all source code for speech processing, cognitive planning, navigation, perception, and manipulation, a video demonstration of the robot successfully executing complex commands, and a comprehensive final report detailing the system architecture, challenges encountered, solutions implemented, and future work.

Grading Rubric

Each assessment will be evaluated based on:

  • Functionality and Correctness: Does the implemented system work as specified? Are there bugs or errors?
  • Technical Design and Implementation: Quality of code, adherence to best practices, modularity, efficiency, and clarity of design.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Clarity, completeness, and organization of reports and code comments.
  • Innovation and Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to creatively solve challenges and go beyond basic requirements (especially for the capstone).
  • Demonstration: The ability to clearly present and demonstrate the working system.
